The Theme of My Board Game

"Club of the Titans"

Hi, Blog! Here is the time for me to figure out my theme of my board game. My game is all about joking and humor! I make my players act as some divines from different cultures. Those Gods come to a world (my map) and try to win as many converts as they can. More importantly, they can use magic and their special power to destroy all the other "competitors". Players shouldn't take it very serious. The theme of this game is somehow based on religion and mythology, but some parts could also be ridiculous and even nonsense. The character "Sun Goku" is not even a god, it is a very famous manga character, that character was developed based on an ancient mythological character in Chinese culture. I want my game to represent lots of pop-culture too. I don't think the ancient mythology conflicts with humor.

"A real God does not lack in venom!" This is my concept statement! A player as a divine in the game has to make his or her opponent's lose all followers in order to become the only God in the new world! Players have to have lots of infighting against their opponents: using magic cards and traps to hurt the other player or sacrificing their own followers to gain powerful magic… You pretty much have to be ruthless to win the game. That’s the style of the game mechanic, but the art style is going to be cute and funny.

  •  The Art Style:

A perfect example for the art style I picture now is a very famous Japanese manga called “Slam Dunk”. The artist likes to draw all the young basketball players in a very adorable and funny style while the plots go into funny parts. The heads and some other parts of the characters are exaggerated: Big head, fat and short limbs, small eyes, big mouth…

On the other hand, when they focus on their matches or the topics in the story serious, those characters were drawn in a very realistic style: the anatomies of them are very well defined, the weights of the figures are very can be easily sensed, and the shadings are very appealing.

Those two images above are from the same cartoon. Below, that is another photo which one of the characters was depicted in cute style:

  • The Themes:
  1. Movie: Godfather

Theme: The only goal is to make your family survive in this world. It is all about controlling and conquering. To become successful, you must learn to be ruthless. Keep weakening your enemies. If you don't eliminate or control all your enemies, you are going to be killed.

2. Movie: The Shawshank Redemption

Theme: Never ever bend to your fate! Life is sometimes not fair, but If you still have a remote opportunity to survive or to win, you should store your power and wait for your chance. Once the time has come, you could regain what you have lost or even become a winner!

3. Novel: The Romance of Three Kingdoms

War is not all about aggressively attacking your opponents. Sometimes it is very important to keep low profile at first in a trouble world. You should not expose your ultimate objectives, try your best to avoid troubles first, and then storing your power. Trying to be the last stand.
